There's a process to searching for an agent. It takes a while to get one; you'll get a lot of rejections, but all of us do, so don't let that discourage you! Here's what you need:
1. The BEST book you can write. This means a lot of editing, and it also means making sure other people can read it and get what you intend out of it. It usually won't be ready to go until its fifth or sixth draft.
2. A good query and synopsis. These are the two items with which you can entice an agent to read your work. You can search online how to write both of these. The query is the essence and soul of your book in just a couple of paragraphs. The synopsis is the complete summary of everything you've written. The agent, unlike a reader, does need to know the ending! This ensures they know that YOU know how to write a story.
3. Information on agents who represent your genre or field. You can use Google to do this, but if you're willing to put in a little money, I suggest Publisher's Marketplace. That's where literary agents report all their sales, which gives authors the chance to see who's actually selling and who's doing it well.
This is important: NO legitimate agent or publisher will ever ask you for money. The agent only makes money if you do—they get a small percentage of what you make. That gives them the incentive to get you the best deal possible. So whatever you do, don't fall for "reading fees" or anything else.
Good luck!
